Saving Arizona’s Lakes: A Fight Against Drought

Arizona’s facing a serious drought, but scientists are working to bring water back to our lakes!

Learn how they’re using new technology and get involved in the fight!

Here’s the problem: Mountains block rain clouds, leaving the “leeward” side (facing away from the ocean) dry.

Help us keep our lakes healthy!

Saving Our Lakes: A Fight Against Drought in Arizona

TL;DR: Arizona is facing a serious drought, but there are ways to help! Scientists are working on ways to bring water back to our lakes, and you can learn about them and even get involved!

Arizona’s Dry Spell

Arizona is known for its beautiful deserts, but it also has some amazing lakes. Think Lake Powell and Lake Mead! These lakes are super important for drinking water, farming, and recreation. But lately, these lakes have been shrinking. This is because Arizona hasn’t had a lot of rain for a long time, which is called a drought. Arizona only gets about 13.6 inches (345 mm) of rain each year, which is pretty low!

Why is Arizona So Dry?

The “Rain Shadow Effect” is a big reason why Arizona is so dry. Imagine a mountain range like the Sierra Nevada mountains. When rain clouds come in from the ocean, they hit the mountain range and have to climb up. As they climb higher, the air gets colder, and the water vapor in the clouds turns into rain. This leaves the side of the mountains facing the ocean (the “windward side”) nice and wet. But on the other side of the mountains (the “leeward side”), the clouds are dry. Arizona is on the leeward side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, which is why it doesn’t get much rain.

What Can We Do?

Scientists and engineers are working hard to solve this problem. They are trying to figure out ways to bring more water to our lakes. Some ideas include:

  • Collecting rainwater: Collecting water from rooftops and other surfaces can help.
  • Using less water: We can all do our part by taking shorter showers, watering our lawns less, and being careful about how much water we use.
  • Building dams: Dams can hold back water from rivers and streams, creating reservoirs for storage.
  • Desalination: This technology removes salt from ocean water to make it drinkable, which can be a big help in dry areas.

Active Climate Rescue Initiative

One group that is working hard to save our lakes is the Active Climate Rescue Initiative (ACRI). ACRI is a group of experts who study the environment and figure out ways to make it better. They are working on new technologies and methods to help fix the drought problem, and they are always looking for ways to make our lakes healthy again!

It’s Up To Us!

Arizona is facing a big challenge with its drought, but there is hope! By learning about the problem and working together, we can help make sure our lakes have enough water for everyone. Let’s all do our part to save our lakes!
